NEW TO YOGA?
Thinking of trying yoga but have a few questions first!
WHAT IS YOGA?
Yoga from the sanskrit word "yuj" (to bind, to unite) is a mind-body-spirit practice with a 5,000-year history of ancient Indian philosophy combining physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation and chanting (mantras).
The "Yoga Sutra" written by the Indian sage Patanjali about 2,000 years ago serves as a philosophical guidebook for all modern yoga and outlines the 8 limbs of yoga: yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asanas (postures), pranayamas (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), dharma (concentration), dhyani (meditation), samadhi (liberation, enlightenment).
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOGA?
Looking for reasons to try yoga? The Yoga Journal found 38 benefits to rolling out the mat!
Here is a sample: improves flexibility and balance, builds muscle strength, perfects your posture, prevents injuries, boost your immune system, helps you sleep deeper, gives you peace of mind and inner strength, and the best of all... it simply makes you happier!
I'M NOT FLEXIBLE, CAN I DO YOGA?
Yes! Yoga is for everybody and every body.
Options, modifications and props are offered during class to suit everybody's level and range of motion so you can practice at your own pace and not force yourself into a shape you're not yet ready for.
With patience and practice, yoga will help you become more flexible on and off the mat.
DOES YOGA HELP LOSE WEIGHT?
Although yoga focus mainly on balance, healing and reconnecting, it will also change your body.
Depending on the frequency and intensity with which you practice, yoga will help you burn calories, create long lean muscles, improve your digestive system, flexibility and range of motion.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BEGIN?
Come as you are with an open mind. It is also helpful to wear something you feel comfortable in and allows you to move freely. Yoga is practiced barefoot so no special footwear necessary.
As you deepen your practice you might want to buy your own mat and props (blocks, belt, bolster) but some loaner mats and blocks are available at the studio if needed, thoroughly disinfected before and after each class.
It is best to practice with an empty stomach to avoid any discomfort during practice as we twist, bend forward and backward so avoid eating anything an hour before class.
Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the class starts and remember to turn off your phone so you don't disrupt the class.
Please inform about any injuries or physical conditions I should know about before class.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I PRACTICE?
Yoga is a dual journey that blends a daily lifestyle philosophy with a flexible physical practice.
While yoga as an art of living is meant to be practiced daily, the physical exercises (Asanas) do not need to be a daily commitment.
-
The Daily Art of Living: The philosophical side of yoga—like mindfulness, kindness, and deep breathing—is something you can easily carry into every single day without ever stepping on a mat
-
The Physical Practice: Moving through yoga poses is a flexible tool for your body. Trying to do this every day right away can be overwhelming and hard to fit into a busy routine.
Start with one or two physical classes per week and see how it goes. You will find that the more you practice, the better you will feel, and the more you will naturally want to step onto your mat even for a few short minutes.
